Hallé oboist Virginia Shaw has a second passion – the Japanese Shō. Made of bamboo pipes, this mouth organ is said to mimic the call of the phoenix. East meets West in music for oboe and strings by Takemitsu, and by the late Belgian composer Wim Henderickx.
